After becoming a young mum, I started my career working for my local authority as a youth worker. I worked within a deprived area with at risk young people. In 2006 whilst studying for a degree in Informal and Community Education I had a little girl with complex health needs. Through being a birth parent to a child that required a lot of clinical support, I became empowered to work alongside the hospice to advocate for families with life limited children like my daughter. I co-chaired engagement groups, spoke at palliative conferences and worked with the hospice to change policies. In 2021 I became a foster carer with the intention of providing planned breaks for children and their foster families. Sadly 2 years into my fostering journey my daughter died, however I continued to provide planned breaks and eventually started fostering a child with a short life expectancy.
Long term caring for life limited children has given me a passion to support and advocate for other foster families experiencing end of life care and bereavement. My role within Fostering Together means that I can work with Nicola and the community to ensure that the families within the service are getting the help and support they need whilst caring for a palliative child.
